Julia Child is a personal role model and one of my heros. The year before I had finally read her memoir--I was sobbing at the end. This collection of letters brought Julia to life through her marvelous friendship with Avis DeVoto (a woman worthy of hero worship herself).
The memoir detailed Julia's life in France and the letters coincided with this time frame and beyond--it also gave more of perspective on American life and the politics of the times. Categories collided in several different ways--it was cool to learn that Avis's husband counted Wallace Stegner as one of his closest friends, as I also read Crossing to Safety in 2020.
