I have never been a fan of abusive relationships protrayed as love stories. Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights being horrifying examples. I have never been a fan of older men writing out their "fictional" fantasies about their attraction to young girls. I will never read Lolita (even though it would be a perfect fit for this category). There is an abundance of "great" literature that glorifies the abuse of women and young girls by claiming them to be romantic but tragic love stories. But I digress...
My Dark Vanessa is about a predatory teacher who grooms and rapes (my bad--falls in love with a 15 year old student). The story is from Vanessa's perspective and the chapters vary in time frame. We switch back and forth from when she was a teenager and the present (2017). It was hard to read because of the subject matter but that being sad it was very well written, a different perspective from all the #metoo headlines. I don't want to ruin the story line but I will say that I am glad that by the end of the book Vanessa is finally on a path towards healing.
