The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon

If you want find out more about Martha Ballard, a midwife from Maine, who kept a diary recording all of her births--don't waste your reading time with this fictionalized version of her life. Her life and work were amazing enough without having to add fictionalized drama. It detracts from the truly amazing woman and midwife she was. I ended up just reading it as a work of fiction--I will stick to actual bibliographies from now one.

A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on her Diary, 1785-1812 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

It won a Pulitizer Prize and rightly so.

The River by Peter Heller

2023 has turned out to be a lot. In times of stress I read a lot BUT I don't retain a lot...it has been that kind of a year to put it mildly.

I don't remember much about this book. I remember thinking that it was spread a bit too thin--too many different plot lines. But I did enjoy it. I learned a lot about forest fires and canoeing and it had a satisficatory ending--if I am remembering this book correctly.
